Cutting the cakeOn Saturday, October 18th, Earth Sciences hosted an evening party to commemorate the 60th anniversary of our department. It was held in 1125 @ Carleton, a state-of-the art, living laboratory overlooking the Ottawa River. The celebration was attended by alumni as well as current and former faculty, researchers, adjuncts, students and staff, some travelling from as far away as British Columbia. It was a rare and wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

Highlights included a concert by artist-in-residence Ian Tamblyn, who treated us to a collection of favorites on guitar and hammer dulcimer, including some very special geology tunes. The cake, designed by Beth Halfkenny, represented the geology of the Ottawa Valley, complete with graben.

Our gathering coincided with the second-annual Throwback Homecoming weekend, sponsored by University Advancement. The department would like to offer a sincere thank-you to all who were in attendance. We look forward to continuing to share our journey in the years to come.
